About Open That Bottle Night
Thanks to Wall Street Journal wine editors Dorothy Gaiter and John Brecker, Open That Bottle Night is an event celebrated around the world the last Saturday of February. Gaiter and Brecker launched Open That Bottle Night as an opportunity to gather in small or large groups and celebrate friendship over bottles of wine always inteded for a for a special occasion, but never opened. Open That Bottle Night is often a time to close the door on world events and focus on talk of wine, travel and friendship. The editors of WSJ suggest that the real point of the night is not really a once a year celebration but a reminder: seize the day. Every day is an opportunity to create new memories that will be celebrated in years to come.

In 2007, Gore Range Natural Science School hosted it’s first-ever Open That Bottle Night in Vail. The fourth annual event returns on February 27, 2010. The evening's activities include presentation of the Founders Stewardship Award, by Alpine Bank, live and silent auctions and entertainment by Tony Gulizia at the piano, accompanied by hometown favorite and LA star Mercedes Dauphinais.

Our sincere thanks to facility sponsor Cascade Resort, Founders Stewardship Award sponsor Alpine Bank and media sponsor, the Vail Daily.

Honoring the tradition of Open That Bottle Night, please bring a bottle of wine to share with your tablemates. Additional wine will be available to supplement your special bottle.

We also encourage you to e-mail your favorite wine story to Natalia for publication in the evening program. All stories will also be sent to the Wall Street Journal. Click on the invitation for details.

2010 Event SummarY

Open That Bottle Night 2010 was celebrated February 27 at the Vail Cascade by 200 guests. As one of the valley’s favorite intimate events, Open That Bottle Night has been bringing friends, both old and new, together the last Saturday of February for the past 5 years, and the tradition continues. Open That Bottle Night celebrates the goodness of life, our many blessings and also raises important support for educational programs that benefit the children of our community.

Open That Bottle Night is also an opportunity to celebrate friends, fine wines and memorable stories, along with thanking all those who have advanced the School’s mission and role in the community.

The evening also honors one person with the Founders Stewardship Award, sponsored by Alpine Bank. This year’s award was presented by Alpine Bank President Glenn Davis to Luke Cartin. As Vail Resorts’ senior mountain environmental affairs manager, Luke’s commitment to environmental stewardship encourages other people to care about the natural world . He truly embodies the spirit of the School’s mission – to awaken a sense of wonder and inspire environmental stewardship.

Evening festivities began with a wine reception, hosted by Avon Liquors and a silent auction. Tony Gulizia entertained guests at a baby grand piano and also continued his melodies during dinner, while also accompanied by Mercedes Dauphinais.

Emcees Carolyn Pope and Tricia Swenson introduced a lively “Wine Label” game, and winners included Shelly Jarnot, who walked away with a stunning pair of ruby and diamond earrings from the Squash Blossom, and Michelle Hovey, who won a “barrel” of 25 awesome wines, donated by many local wine stores. Carolyn and Tricia also shared a few wine descriptions which depicted (in wine terms) several evening guests, including Chris Jarnot, Hans Willimann, Peter Mackechnie and Natalia Hanks

Special guest John Fielder shared why he is such a supporter of the Science School and how he got his first exposure to the natural world from a teacher who believed that experiential teaching can change lives, as it did his. A lively bidding on 9 auction items and scholarships wrapped up the evening, while guests enjoyed their surf and turf dinner and also fine wines, generously provided by the Cascade.

Memories In a Bottle

The following are some of the interesting tales of wine and fond memories provided by OTBN guests. Their words and memories enrich the night and we hope that the experience of uncorking and sharing special bottles with friends, new and old, brings you great joy!

Cynthia Forstmann – Plenty of Bubbly My husband and I stopped in Napa Valley near the end of our honeymoon . We intended to tour several vineyards, but never left the first place we stopped – Moet and Chandon – where we enjoyed a champagne tasting and lunch. We bought two cases of Chandon White Star and had them shipped back to Washington DC where we shared them with friends and family. Our marriage and our last bottle are almost 18 years old!

Silvia and Alan Danson – Malbecs and Mendoza We went biking through the Mendoza wine country in Argentina two years ago in October. In the Valle de Uco wine region in the province of Mendoza, we found what must be the most beautiful winery in the world. We’d even say it might well be the most beautiful industrial installation in the world. This is the winery of Bodegas Salentein that includes a magnificent art gallery housing the Killka Art Collection of contemporary Argentine paintings and sculpture as well as 19th and 20th century Dutch paintings. The winery also has a beautiful guest house and fabulous restaurant. Go to www.bodegasalentein.com for more information and photos.

Another stop on our trip was at the Cavas Wine Lodge, an absolutely drop-dead beautiful five-star Relais and Chateau set among vineyards, with individual villas, each with there own plunge pool and roof garden (www.cavaswinelodge.com).  The entire region enjoys fabulous views of the snow-capped foothills of the Andes. As for a favorite wine, we found almost all of the Malbecs we tasted to be wonderful — and reasonably priced.

Pete Glansberg – Emeril in Peril Several years ago, we were traveling with a group of mobile home dealers on a trip to Cabo San Lucas. The trip was being hosted by a manufacturer who was wining and dining us. During one exceptional dinner, where we were seated two tables away from Emeril Lagasse, he ordered a bottle of the restaurant’s best wine from the wine list. Since the menu prices were listed in pesos, he assumed the wine prices were as well, and ordered a bottle of wine, thinking that the cost was 1600 pesos. Needless to say, he was a little shocked when the bill came, but ended up having to pony up $1,600 for the single bottle of wine.

Tricia Swenson - Wilhelm Wine Little did I know that my golf game would ever be tested by some of the valley’s best. I had entered a putting contest for the new Cordillera Golf Club in Vail Village along with many others. To my surprise, I beat out the other media attendees and putted 4 strokes for three putts, which was the lowest number of putts, thus winning the bottle of wine I share with my table mates tonight. This 2006 32 Winds Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir is special to me because of its connection to the Wilhelm family, the new owners of Cordillera. The fact that only 600 cases of this wine were produced makes it all the more special to share.

Gary Valentine – Navigating to the Grand Cru Thirty-five years ago we booked an exciting hot air balloon trip in the wine district of the Cote de Beaune in France a region known for the high dollar Grand Cru chardonnays produced in the area of Puligny Montrachet.

On day one before taking off on our first balloon adventure we met the other four members of our group for a late lunch in the warm summer sun, including Bob Cummings, the famous film and television star, who was with his 16 year old son, Bobby, and a couple from Texas. Cummings and the other couple set off to take their turn in the first balloon, the three of them in the air and we other three chasing the balloon in a van until they landed safely and changed positions with Bobby, Roz and me. They would then chase our balloon in the van.

Our takeoff was smooth as silk, and we soon found ourselves enjoying the spectacular views of unending vineyards as far as the eye could see. However, our pilot was anxious to land because the wind had pushed us over to the famous Puligny Montrachet Grand Cru vineyards area where the balloon company could have lost its license if we were to have landed in one of these precious vineyards.

The pilot quickly pointed to a nearby hill covered with Grand Cru vineyards where a very high stone wall had a wide dirt road following the wall. Our only landing chance was to crash into the wall. We crossed our fingers and crammed into the bottom of the basket. Suddenly - WHAM! Right into the wall, the three of us tumbling all over each over. The teenager Bobby was smiling broadly. He had landed on top of Roz. All of us were okay. Whew!

On the final day we were again floating above the Grand Cru area when it became time to land without smashing into the priceless vineyards. This time, however, our pilot pointed down to an open field of cows surrounded by vineyards. As we descended a man came running across the road shouting angrily. Just as we landed among the cows our van drove up to the field and the navigator jumped out of the van with a table, a large bottle of champagne and a box full of champagne glasses.

The man from the winery ran over to our balloon and said something like “de’ou son vous” which sounded to me like “where are you from”. Without thinking I said “nous son de Texas” . The man smiled broadly, shook my hand and said “Je aime beaucoup Texas”. He seemed to have a liking for Texas, but we’ll never know if he really thought we had flown a very long way to France.

He then invited all of us to his winery across the road where he kept the Puligny Montrachet Grand Cru casked wine. Our new friend opened the taps to all of us, and we spent our final evening in France enjoying unexpected French congeniality plus amazing generosity with the most unforgettable chardonnay we had ever tasted before or since.

2010 Founders Stewardship Award

On February 27 th at Open That Bottle Night, Luke Cartin of Vail Resorts will be recognized for his contribution to our community with the presentation of the Founders Stewardship Award.

As Vail Resorts Senior Mountain Environmental Affairs Manager, Luke plays a vital role in supporting environmental initiatives at the resorts in our community and around the West. His consistent, diligent commitment ensures the implementation of large-scale projects such as waste reduction, recycling, composting, energy reduction, forest health, environmental education for ski schools, and Edible Gardens at restaurants during summer operations. Luke also advises counties on green building, waste diversion, water quality and organizes the re-use of over 120 tons of construction lumber.

The Founders Stewardship Award annually recognizes someone in our community who inspires environmental stewardship, encourages fellow citizens to care about the natural world and provides solutions that address or mitigate a natural resource issue. Luke’s work matches perfectly the award’s criteria and he embodies the spirit of the Science School’s mission to awaken a sense of wonder and inspire environmental stewardship.

Caroline Haines, chair of the award committee commented, “The nominees for the 2010 award were very impressive, and we had a difficult time choosing the winner. The process was totally inspiring and encouraging as the committee delved into the efforts of so many individuals and their work toward environmental stewardship.”

The nominees included: Jim Gonzales of Minturn, Bill Carlson with the Town of Vail, Michael Moser, instructor at Berry Creek Middle School, CAST Challenge organizer David Allen of Telluride, Matt Scherr with the Eagle Valley Alliance for Sustainability, Julie Noolan of Vail, and Harry Frampton of East West Partners.

Previous award recipients include environmentalist Caroline Bradford, teacher Ted James, and students Holly Domke and Tucker Cocchiarella.

The 2010 Founders Stewardship Award will be presented at Open That Bottle Night by Glenn Davis, President of Alpine Bank, the Founders Stewardship Award sponsor.

2009 Open That Bottle Night Summary

Open that Bottle Night 2009 , the Science School’s annual signature fundraiser, was celebrated this year on February 27. Nearly 200 friends and colleagues, both old and new, came together in the beautifully decorated Donovan Pavilion to carry on the tradition of celebrating camaraderie and goodwill and opening bottles of wine that evoke fond memories and interesting stories.

Begun in the Vail Valley three years ago, Open That Bottle Night is an event actually celebrated around the world thanks to Wall Street Journal’s wine editors Dorothy Gaiter and John Brecher, who started the idea in 1999. The wine editors saw a missed opportunity to gather in small or large groups and celebrate friendship over a special bottles of wine that typically are being saved for a special occasion that never happens!

Guests brought their favorite “saved” bottles and shared the stories behind them with their tablemates, while supplemental wine was available before and during dinner, thanks to generous community businesses, including West Vail Liquor, Alpine Liquor, Avon Liquor, Canyon Wind and Vin 48.

Evening sponsors included Event Sponsor, Slifer Designs, Founders Stewardship Award Sponsor, Alpine Bank and Media Sponsor, Vail Daily.

After welcoming guests, emcee Carolyn Pope shared her suggestions on how some of the evening’s guests could be described if they were a bottle of wine. These included Becky Hernreich, Don Rogers, Alan Danson and Luc Meyer:

B . Hernreich Beerenauslese, Non-vintage (actually, unknown vintage)
For those of you who don’t know, Beerenauslese means “Harvest of selected berries.”

This charming wine is available in extremely limited quantities. Most often enjoyed after dinner, this dessert style wine is a unique blend of very rare grapes that have been selected solely for their high quality and perfect ripeness. Lush and supple, with a hint of sparkle, you can’t help but notice the great legs that accompany the rich, elegant finish. Travels well and follows after most any dinner specialty, from complex and difficult to casual and laid back, but holds up on its own extremely well. Can be enjoyed now or held closely for future enjoyment.

Rogers Reserve Rose, “Vail Daily Vineyard”, Vintage 1999
We recommend opening this bottle first thing in the morning to accompany your breakfast, though it mellows considerably if allowed to breathe for at least 12 hours. Highly acidic but with a thoughtful finish, this crisp wine may be too tart for some, though it seems softer when accompanied with a grain of salt. Can easily become a daily favorite when enjoyed with an open mind and liberal attitude.

Danson Cabernet from Old-vines, East Coast Chateau Dartmouth
This bold, one of a kind wine is from a unique blend of grapes that no winemaker has been courageous enough to clone. Grown from only the finest ivy-league, old-vines including a grafting from both the Harvard and Dartmouth varietals. Best consumed on its own due to its big nose and hearty, robust personality, this wine can potentially overwhelm subtle courses, but pairs extremely well with a refined, Mexican dish. Even the most ardent teetotalers have great difficulty turning down this bold, fruit forward finish .

Chateau de Meyer Sauterne, Vintage 1970
Aged 35 years in French oak, this fabulous Sauterne is decidedly French in character. When allowed to breathe, the bouquet has a hint fine English rose, which just a touch of frog. This collectible wine has been affected by botrytis, or “the Noble Rot” . You’ll find it well balanced with high concentrations of sugars, while still maintaining the high level of acidity needed to balance the wine and keep it from tasting cloyingly sweet (which is certainly NOT a problem with this Sauterne). Chateau Meyer must be enjoyed in moderation, unless you want a heck of a headache the next morning, due to its alcohol content of over 14%. Fortunately, this wine has a very long life; you can expect it continue improving as long as the next 70 years.

Alpine Bank’s Glenn Davis then presented the 2009 Founders Stewardship Award to Vail Mountain School junior Holly Domke. Glenn noted, “It’s a great pleasure to be here tonight, presenting the 2009 Founder’s Stewardship Award. This award embodies the spirit of the mission of Gore Range Natural Science School - to awaken a sense of wonder and inspire environmental stewardship through natural science education - by annually honoring an individual whose commitment to environmental stewardship has made our community a better place. And this year’s recipient exemplifies this spirit perfectly.

We are pleased to present the 2009 Founders Stewardship Award to Holly Domke, an 11th grader at Vail Mountain School. As a high honors achiever, a serious science student, artist, musician, volunteer, mentor and friend of many, Holly’s imprint on our community is profound, particularly for someone so young.

Congratulations Holly, on your many contributions to our valley and particularly to your commitment each week to the young girls at Avon Elementary School, where you shine as their mentor and teacher in the Girls in Science enrichment program. Thank you Holly and so many students in our valley for your commitment to science education.”

The evening also included silent and live auctions and the auctioning of scholarships, which support students who participate in field science programs throughout the school year as well as summer camps .

Live auction items included:

  • Foods of Vail dinner for 8 with wine donated from the Bronfman’s cellar,
  • a blue topaz and diamond necklace donated by Squash Blossom,
  • Vail Catering Concepts dinner for 8 with dine donated by Brenda and Joe McHugh,
  • A painting by Darcie Peet donated by the Cogswell Gallery,
  • Board of Directors case of wine, donated by the Science School board,
  • Broadmoor Golf, Stay, Wine and Dine, donated by the Broadmoor, the Gazette, and Carolyn and Steve Pope,
  • Dinner for 10 donated by Luc and Liz Meyer, the Cogswells and dish Restaurant
  • Kelly Liken dinner for 8 with paired wine, donated by Kelly Liken.

Entertainment for the evening was provided by “In the Buff”, an a cappella group of 13 upper classmen from the University of Colorado.

A new feature to the event was the Wine Label Raffle Game, which allowed participants to purchase wine labels with the opportunity to win two prizes, a basket of 17 wines, donated by local wine stores, and $4,000 diamond earrings from Betteridge Jewelers, donated by Becca Davis.
