In the fall of 2005, Gore Range Natural Science School launched a new natural science program at Avon Elementary School in Avon, Colorado. Modeled after a similar program at Aspen Elementary offered by the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies in Aspen, Colorado, the Avon In-school program was an enormous success in its first year, serving every K-5 student with bi-weekly natural science lessons taught by Science School educators.

Building on the program's first year successes, the Science School continues Avon In-School during the 2006-07 academic year by doubling the amount of natural science lessons students receive through weekly programming taught by Science School instructor Lara Carlson.

Funded in part through grants made possible by the Town of Avon, and the George Family Foundation, the Avon In-school Environmental Education represents a new model of environmental education for Gore Range Natural Science School and Eagle County. The Avon In-School model expands upon the Science School's traditional model of field science by establishing a long-term and multi-disciplinary approach that will:

  • Enrich the overall AES teaching and learning environment

  • Advance core curriculum learning while facilitating English language acquisition

  • Increase by 30% the number of local youth GRNSS currently serves

  • Prepare students for future State-mandated 5th-grade science assessments

The Avon In-School program continues to integrate outdoor learning over the course of the academic year and reaches over 300 students at Avon Elementary. The Science School believes that student participation in year-round natural science instruction will increase science literacy, build a greater connection to the natural world, and reinforce academic achievement. Additionally, as students who remain at AES progress through grade levels, natural science lessons will build on material and themes presented in the previous year so that lessons become interconnected as they expand.
