Elementary School Programs

To achieve the goal of independent thinking, students of different ages participate in different activities. Programs for elementary students focus on hands-on learning and familiarization with broad scientific concepts. Topics for younger students include animal track and plant identification, geology, winter tracking, and forest ecology.

Living Things
Grades 1 - 2

In this program students will focus on exploring the natural world with their five senses. Over a period of two days, students will learn to identify living organisms vs. non- living things, track animals and identify common plant and animal species.

Winter Tracks & Signs
Grade 3
Students are introduced to local animals and their adaptations to the winter environment through tracking games and observation exercises.

Geology
Grade 4 & 6
Studying the Eagle River watershed, students will learn the local geology and examine the major forces that have shaped our landscape.

Forest Ecology
Grade 5
By exploring the ecological communities of the Eagle River watershed, students learn concepts related to energy flow, succession and adaptation.

Middle School Programs

Middle school and older students conduct field research and contribute their work to national databases. This data is then used to monitor ecosystem health.

Geology
Grade 4 & 6
Studying the Eagle River watershed, students will learn the local geology and examine the major forces that have shaped our landscape.

Stream Research
Grades 7-12
Students apply the scientific method to research the chemical and biological components of streams in the Eagle River watershed.

Biodiversity & Biophysical Research
Grades 7-12
During this research-intensive course, students study the biodiversity of the Eagle River watershed and learn to ask scientific questions, formulate hypotheses, collect, interpret, and analyze data, and present results.

Winter Ecology
Grades 8-12
Students learn about the properties of snow, winter adaptations of local flora and fauna, avalanche skills, snow research and track identification.
