youth programs

SKE-CologyTM

Developed in cooperation with the Colorado Division of Wildlife and the U.S. Forest Service, SKE-CologyTM  is an environmental educational program that educates young skiers and snowboarders about ski resort ecology and the winter environment the use of designated on-mountain trails and hands-on environmental education lessons at the Nature Discovery Center adjacent Eagles Nest. The program’s overall goal is to increase youth awareness that a ski area is a diverse and fascinating ecosystem full of wildlife that have incredible adaptations to the long, cold Colorado winters. SKE-COLOGY tells these stories in fun and interactive lessons that provide ski school students with an appreciation for life on Vail Mountain.

During weekly ski school visits, GRNSS’ team of naturalists engages students in hands-on lessons about predator/prey relationships, camouflage, and a variety of other adaptations animals employ for survival in winter.

To participate in the SKE-Cology program, or to learn more about Vail’s ski school, visit www.vail.com.

High Country Speaker Series

Each winter Gore Range Natural Science School partners with the Eagle Valley Library District to sponsor the High Country Speaker Series held the second Tuesday of each month, January through March. Our goal is to bring in speakers whose work sheds light on the unique nature of the western landscape. Speakers include writers, artists, scientists, policy experts, and others whose research, writing, art or other relevant contributions have made an indelible mark on our relationship with and understanding of our natural and cultural surroundings. Former speakers include Craig Childs, Dan Fagre, Ann Zwinger, Linda Hogan and more.

Programs, which are free to attend, begin at 6:30 and finish by 8:00 pm. Space is limited, so advanced registration is suggested. Call the Eagle Valley Library District at 949-6797 or Gore Range Natural Science School at 827-9725 ext. 10 to reserve your space. The Avon Public Library is located at 200 Benchmark Road, near Nottingham Lake and the Avon Recreation Center.

Know Your Valley

Vail’s stunning natural setting has drawn many people to the Vail area, for good. Surrounded by thousands of acres of national forest inhabited by deer, elk, bear and eagle – to name only a precious few species, we take great pride and concern over the health and future integrity of Vail’s natural resources. Gore Range Natural Science School and the Vail Symposium invite you to join these outings dedicated to exploring the intricate nature of our mountain environment. Program descriptions will be posted by early January.

Winter is a great time to be outside exploring the natural world and learning about the lives and adaptations that wildlife, trees and other plants employ for survival. It’s also a wonderful time to study animal tracks recorded in the snow.

Gore Range Natural Science School offers daily snowshoe hikes that explore these secrets to survival and the stories left behind. Jump start your winter fun with a visit to the Nature Discovery Center atop Vail Mountain.
