Winter is a great time to be outside exploring the natural world and learning about the lives and adaptations that wildlife, trees and other plants employ for survival. It’s also a wonderful time to study animal tracks recorded in the snow.

Gore Range Natural Science School offers daily snowshoe hikes that explore these secrets to survival and the stories left behind. Jump start your winter fun with a visit to the Nature Discovery Center atop Vail Mountain.

On the Move: Science and Stories of Animal Migration

Through a partnership of the Eagle Valley Library District and Gore Range Natural Science School, the 8th Annual High Country Speaker Series launches on Tuesday evenings beginning January 26. Expanding from 3 to 5 speakers this year, the High Country Speaker Series brings scholars to our community to share their knowledge and views of our unique western landscape. The theme for this year’s series is animal migration and we are pleased to bring these exciting speakers to the Vail Valley.

SKE-CologyTM
Developed in cooperation with the Colorado Division of Wildlife and the U.S. Forest Service, SKE-CologyTM  is an environmental educational program that educates young skiers and snowboarders about ski resort ecology and the winter environment the use of designated on-mountain trails and hands-on environmental education lessons at the Nature Discovery Center adjacent Eagles Nest. The program’s overall goal is to increase youth awareness that a ski area is a diverse and fascinating ecosystem full of wildlife that have incredible adaptations to the long, cold Colorado winters. SKE-COLOGY tells these stories in fun and interactive lessons that provide ski school students with an appreciation for life on Vail Mountain.

During weekly ski school visits, GRNSS’ team of naturalists engages students in hands-on lessons about predator/prey relationships, camouflage, and a variety of other adaptations animals employ for survival in winter.

To participate in the SKE-Cology program, or to learn more about Vail’s ski school, visit www.vail.com.
